Fireworks Safety Guidelines
-
Follow all laws: Obey local and state laws regarding the use of state-approved consumer fireworks. Always check your city or municipality rules before igniting any fireworks.
-
Purchase responsibly: Buy fireworks only from licensed, reputable dealers. Never use illegal explosives or attempt to modify or create your own fireworks.
-
Read instructions: Carefully read and follow all safety labels and instructions on firework packaging before use.
-
Use common sense: Never place any part of your body over a firework device. Do not look directly into tubes or attempt to hold lit fireworks in your hand.
-
Handle with care: Fireworks should be kept in a cool, dry place and should never be carried in your pocket. Do not aim, throw, or point fireworks at others.
-
Dispose safely: Used fireworks should be soaked in water before being thrown away to prevent accidental ignition.
-
Adult supervision required: Fireworks should only be handled and ignited by responsible adults. Children should never light or play with fireworks.
-
Maintain a safe environment: Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open area away from buildings, vehicles, and dry vegetation that could ignite.
-
Keep spectators at a safe distance: Bystanders should remain at least 30 feet away from the launching area at all times.
-
Avoid alcohol when lighting: Alcohol impairs judgment and increases the risk of firework misuse and injury. Wait until after your display to celebrate.
-
Choose a proper surface: Fireworks should be lit on a hard, flat, and level surface. If using fireworks on grass, place a wooden board down to ensure stability.
-
Stabilize larger items: Use bricks or other sturdy supports to help prevent aerial fireworks from tipping over during launch.
-
Wear eye protection: Safety glasses are strongly recommended for anyone lighting fireworks.
-
One at a time: Light fireworks one at a time and never attempt to relight a malfunctioning ("dud") firework. Wait at least 5 minutes before soaking and disposing of it properly.
-
Be mindful of wind: Avoid lighting fireworks in windy conditions. Ensure wind is blowing away from spectators, and postpone if conditions are unsafe.
-
Keep extinguishing tools nearby: Always have a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher within reach in case of emergency.
-
Protect pets and animals: Fireworks can be distressing to animals. Keep pets indoors and move livestock away from firing areas during your show.
